Violin-maker Borja Bernabeu, born in Madrid in 1971, received the Fondazione Cologni Prize at the 17th edition of the Antonio Stradivari International Triennial Violin-Making Competition, an award given to a foreign violin-maker who is, however, resident in Italy and has chosen our country as his place of residence and craftsmanship. Alessandra de Nitto, editorial and events director of the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d'Arte, presented the award.
The award ceremony and gala concert took place on the evening of Wednesday 25 September at the Amilcare Ponchielli Theatre in Cremona. Paolo Bodini, president of the jury of the Triennial Competition writes: 'The event is once again the most important event of its kind in the world. I accepted this appointment out of a sincere spirit of service to the violin-making community, both the local community, to which I am particularly attached, and the international community, which I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the many years of my involvement in the violin-making world'. Borja Bernabeu, a violin maker of great talent, moved to Cremona in 1998 to study at the Scuola di Liuteria Antonio Stradivari in Cremona: here he learnt to make and restore mainly from master Lorenzo Marchi. In 2001, he graduated from the Scuola di Liuteria di Cremona, obtaining his diploma as a violin maker. "I make violins, violas and cellos. My work is inspired by the ancient classical instruments of the Cremonese tradition, by makers such as Stradivari, Guarneri and Amati, interpreted in my own personal style,' the award-winning master explains.
